Are you a Council, Ranger or Gov CAA
worker that supports mandatory desexing?. |
 |
|
Many
councils and CAA workers have already shown
support for this program, it's only through
engaging with Council can we drive effective
change.
CatRescue
acknowledges the enormous work of Rangers and
Council to help animals.
Many councils have also offered feedback as to
how proposed changes to CAA would need to take
into account the logistical and management
issues of such a change. Who would enforce the
projects? How would the local community support
the program? What would this mean to a ranger's
workload?

Rangers and CAA workers are hard working,
dedicated people who have a largely thankless
task. They are part of the solution.
"Council generally supports the mandatory
desexing principle with the obvious
exception of animals that are owned by
registered breeders. In Council's
experience, it is the unowned dogs and cats
which cause the most problems for councils.
If we can reduce the number of unowned
animals in the community then a fair
proportion of the problems associated with
these animals would disappear." -
Willoughby Council
"Council is
currently working on an animal management
strategy and I would suggest that the
desexing of cats and dogs would be of great
benefit for our community in terms of the
environment, amenity of the area as well as
general animal control and safety and , and
council would support the compulsary
desexing of these animals if it was to be
proposed in an amendment to the
legislation."
- Auburn
Council
Greater Taree City Council promotes the
desexing of cats and dogs, and the
significant importance of desexing,and
believes everyone in the community should
have the opportunity of desexing their
pets,no matter how dire their financial
situation. Council is supportive of your
goal of ultimately ending pet overpopulation
etc,and the benefits thereof, but to this
end, sees the use of a variety of strategies
promoted and supported by the DLG,rather
than mandatory desexing as an answer to this
issue. - Greater Taree Council
Council welcomes mandatory desexing of dogs
and cats. The benefits to Wollongong are
varied but include:
-
less unwanted strays potentially causing
traffic accidents
-
less animals requiring impounding and
euthanase potential reduction in
aggressive behaviour from desexed male
animals
- a
significant reduction over time in the
feral cat problem in natural areas,
therefore allowing native animals to
re-populate our escarpment, and
-
reduced hostility towards our rangers
staff due to impound release fees being
cheaper at the desexed rate should an
animal end up in the pound
We
would however recommend that animals
owned by registered breeders be provided
an exemption and animals impounded at a
Council Pound also be given an exemption
to allow Council to release animals to
other animal rescue organisations. -
Lord Mayor - City of Wollongong

Every year
over 100,000 animals are euthanased in
pounds and shelters across Australia.
Many of these animals come from unwanted
litters born to undesexed pets. Rangers,
Rescue
groups and shelters can only do so much
and without effective legislation this will
be a never ending problem.
Compulsory desexing would benefit:
Local Government, by reducing the ongoing
costs of trapping, management, storage and
euthanasia of thousands of animals every
year.
Cat Welfare, Every year thousands of
unwanted animals are born. Many of these
become stray and live in poor health.
Compulsory desexing would reduce this number
of unwanted animals.
The Environment, Stray cats often become
wild which can impact wildlife and the
environment. Compulsory cat desexing would
impact the number of cats that become wild.
The Community, Undesexed cats often colonise
around community areas, litters can grow
exponentially and cause health and community
issues. Compulsory cat desexing would reduce
stray cat populations and remedy this
problem.

There are many reasons why people should
desex. As well as helping to stop
overpopulation, the following are

Say no to Animals in Pet Shops:
The practice of selling animals from pet
shops promotes impulse buying and
irresponsible breeding for profit.
Please help us to stop it. We already
